First meeting of the United States-Uruguay Council on Trade and Investment
On April 26, the first meeting of the Council created by the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) was held in Washington DC. John K Veroneau, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, headed the United States delegation, and Dr. Gonzalo Fernández, Presidency Secretary, headed the Uruguayan envoy.

On January 25, 2007 a Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) was signed between Uruguay and the United States in Montevideo.

Gonzalo Fernandez visit Washington, DC.
A busy schedule in Washington, DC. Minister
of Economy and Finance, Danilo Astori, and Secretary of the Presidency,
Gonzalo Fernandez visited Washington, DC this November, in order to
maintain, together with Ambassador Carlos Gianelli, a number of meetings
with World BankDirectors to advocate for a
investment project approval that will create 2500 jobs in Uruguay. The
project was successfully approved the following week, November 21st,
2006.
"The boards of directors of the International Finance Corporation and
the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency today approved a $170
million investment by IFC and a guarantee of up to $350 million from
MIGA for the Orion pulp mill project in Uruguay. The two organizations,
after completing a thorough review of the facts, are convinced that the
mill will generate significant economic benefits for Uruguay and cause
no environmental harm... "

Uruguay
- United States Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT).
The bilateral treaty between Uruguay and
the United States of America concerning the Encouragement and Reciprocal
Protection of Investment (BIT), will enter into force on November 1st,
2006.
It was signed at the Summit of the
Americas, in Mar del Plata, Argentina, on November 4th, 2005.
Recently both Governments completed their internal sanction
procedures and during the VIº Meeting of the Joint Commission on Trade
and Investment (Montevideo, October 2 & 3, 2006) the instruments of
ratification were exchanged.

The Embassy of Uruguay and the Uruguay Cultural Foundation for the Arts present a Candombe Workshop conducted by Daniel "Tatita" Marquez (drums) and Eugenia Silveira Chirimini (dance).
It will cover the three candombe drums, the different candombe styles played at Montevideo neighborhoods "Sur", "Palermo" and "Cordón", and specific roles and movements of candombe's characters "Mama Vieja", "Gramillero", "Vedette" and "Escobero," plus the "Cuerpo de Baile" (dancing crew).

President Vázquez speech at "The Economist" Seminar: "Uruguay willing to widen markets."
President Vázquez said that in 2007 the Government will allocate to Public Health, Infrastructure and Security an increase of $109 millions, in comparison to 2006, but with an additional of $65 millions. He added that Uruguay will work for a greater commercial opening and to outperform its economics goals.

From February 4 to 9, 2007, Quebec was the host of the greatest international wine Competition in North America: the 14th edition of Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada (SMV). More than 1708 wines coming from 28 countries were tasted and judged by an eminent international jury of world tasters. Indeed, 59 judges coming from 19 countries gathered to carry out the selection of the best wines in competition.
